John W. Bickel II

Born in Champaign, Illinois and raised in both Illinois and Texas, Mr. Bickel received his Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1970. Upon graduation, he served a three-year assignment as an infantry officer in the United States Army, which included a tour in West Germany as an aide-de-camp for Major General Charles J. Simmons. Mr. Bickel received his Juris Doctor from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1976. While in law school, he was President of the Student Bar Association (1975-1976), a Chief Justice for the Moot Court Board, and was elected to the Barristers, a scholastic honor society. Mr. Bickel is a member of the American Bar and the Dallas Bar Associations (Litigation Section), the State Bar of Texas (Chairman, Litigation Committee of the Environmental and Natural Resource Law Section), and the New York State Bar. Mr. Bickel is admitted to practice before a number of federal district courts, the Fifth and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeal, and the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Bickel is on the Executive Committee at Southern Methodist University School of Law, a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, a Life Fellow in the Dallas Bar Foundation and is a member of the Citizens for a Qualified Judiciary and the Markey-Wigmore Chapter of the Inns of Court. In addition, Mr. Bickel has served several terms as a Trustee of the West Point Association of Graduates.

 

Mr. Bickel is the author or co-author of a number of articles concerning the legal profession, including "Professionalism: Virtue or a Byword for the Old Boy Network," Texas Lawyer; "Civil Evidence," 45 Southwestern Law Journal 1345; "With Justice for Some, But Mediation for All," Texas Lawyer; "Etiquette of the Advocate," Texas Lawyer; "By a Jury of Your Peers," Texas Lawyer; and "Keep Raising the Curtain," Texas Lawyer, and Chapter 13 in Lawyers Cooperative Federal Practice Guide (American Inns of Court Series, 1999) entitled "Exhibits and Other Evidence of the Case."

 

Mr. Bickel is a frequent public speaker on many issues affecting the legal profession and is a driving influence behind Bickel & Brewers Hospitality and Patent Law Seminars, as well as the firm's public interest law firm - Bickel and Brewer Storefront - and its charitable foundation - Bickel & Brewer Foundation.  For the past three consecutive years, Mr. Bickel has been voted one of “The Best Lawyers in Texas” in a survey of his peers published in Texas Monthly. In 2005, this same survey recognized Mr. Bickel as one of the “Top 100” attorneys practicing in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and he was named by D Magazine as “One of the Best Lawyers in Dallas.”
